Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 1, 2026
Previously On ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. If you have questions, reach out at privacy@previouslyon.app.
1. Information We Collect
Account Information
When you create an account, we collect your email address and the authentication method you chose (email/password, Apple Sign-In, or Google Sign-In). We do not store your Apple or Google credentials directly — those are handled by their respective identity providers.
Reading Progress
We store the books you add to your library, your current chapter position in each book, and any books you mark as favorites. This data is the core of what makes Previously On useful, and it lives in your account.
Uploaded Files
If you upload an EPUB file for processing, we temporarily store that file to extract structured story data (characters, events, plotlines). Once processing is complete, the original file is deleted from our servers. The extracted structured data is retained to power the app experience.
Subscription Information
Subscription purchases are handled by Apple (App Store) and Google (Google Play) through RevenueCat. We receive confirmation of your subscription status but never see your payment card details. RevenueCat may collect device identifiers and purchase history as described in their own privacy policy.
Usage Data
We collect basic usage information such as app version, device type, and crash reports. This helps us fix bugs and improve the app. We do not sell this data or use it for advertising.
2. How We Use Your Information
We use the information we collect to:
- Provide and maintain the Previously On service
- Sync your reading progress across devices
- Process EPUB files and generate story data
- Manage your subscription and verify access to premium features
- Send transactional emails (account confirmation, password reset)
- Diagnose technical issues and improve app stability
- Comply with legal obligations
We do not use your data to serve targeted advertising. We do not sell your personal information to third parties.
3. Data Storage and Security
Your account data and reading progress are stored in a PostgreSQL database hosted on Supabase. Authentication is managed by Supabase Auth, which handles password hashing, session tokens, and OAuth flows securely.
Our backend infrastructure runs on AWS. Data is encrypted in transit using TLS and encrypted at rest. We apply industry-standard security practices, but no system is perfectly secure. If you discover a vulnerability, please contact us at privacy@previouslyon.app.
4. Third-Party Services
Previously On integrates with the following third-party services. Each has its own privacy policy governing how they handle data.
- Supabase — database hosting and authentication. Supabase processes your email address and session data.
- RevenueCat — subscription management. RevenueCat processes purchase receipts and subscription status.
- Apple — App Store distribution and Apple Sign-In. Apple's privacy policy governs any data shared through their services.
- Google — Google Play distribution and Google Sign-In. Google's privacy policy governs any data shared through their services.
5. Data Retention
We retain your account data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your personal information within 30 days, except where we're required to retain it for legal or financial compliance purposes (such as subscription transaction records, which we keep for up to 7 years).
Uploaded EPUB files are deleted immediately after processing completes. Crash logs and usage analytics are retained for up to 12 months.
6. Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:
- Access — request a copy of the personal data we hold about you
- Correction — ask us to correct inaccurate data
- Deletion — request that we delete your account and associated data
- Portability — request your data in a machine-readable format
- Objection — object to certain types of processing
To exercise any of these rights, email us at privacy@previouslyon.app. We'll respond within 30 days.
7. GDPR (European Users)
If you're in the European Economic Area, our legal basis for processing your data is:
- Contract performance — processing necessary to provide the service you signed up for
- Legitimate interests — improving app stability and diagnosing issues
- Legal obligation — retaining transaction records as required by law
You have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority if you believe we've handled your data unlawfully.
8. CCPA (California Users)
California residents have the right to know what personal information we collect, to request deletion, and to opt out of the sale of personal information. We do not sell personal information. To submit a request, contact us at privacy@previouslyon.app.
9. Children's Privacy
Previously On is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we'll delete it promptly.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we'll update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For significant changes, we'll notify you via email or an in-app notice. Continued use of the app after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
